The problem of practice that I am addressing is that students are not citing the sources of their research projects, and when they do, they are not following a uniform style. I would like students to make reasonable citations for their grade-level. Students will have access to laptops, iPads, and a computer lab to research and explore their topic of interest as their final evaluation piece.
To ease students into the amount of bibliographic information they will need to collect, I am following Kathy Schrock’s Research and Style Manual. I will be following the gradual release model to scaffold the students’ understanding. First, I will explicitly show the students how to cite a specific source, then we will do it together, and finally, the students will do it on their own or with a partner.
There are many technologies that can be used to help students overcome barriers that they face when they cite their sources, like time and recalling the required bibliographic information for citations. My students have access to iPads and there is an app called EasyBib that cites books by scanning their barcodes, or by using their simple search engine. This app is free and easy to use. For citing other sources, such as websites, newspapers, magazines, and so on, OSLIS Citation Generator is an elementary-friendly website that takes user inputted information and organizes all of the bibliographic information into the proper format.
I will know that students have the skills and understanding to create reasonable citations when they take what they have learned and apply it to a research project without my assistance.
