I am going to be using the gradual release model to teach students how to create citations. Students are going to be assessed throughout this process so I know how and when to release responsibility to them. I will use classroom observations at first to look for student engagement, reactions, and interactions during the “I Do” and “We Do” components of the process.
Once the students come to the “You Do” component of the process I will be assessing the students to see if they can apply this skill on their own. For example, if I complete a mini-lesson on book citations, I would assess the students’ sample Works Cited page of their favorite books for the proper bibliographic information. According to Kathy Schrock’s Research and Style Manual that means the students should record: (1) Author, last name first. (2) Title of book. (italicized) (3) City of publication: (4) Publisher, date of publication.
Their research project should have a list of sources in the MLA style. It’s not until research project that I will be evaluating if students have gained the skills and understanding to make reasonable citations on their own. It is an authentic application of their skills and it will tell me if they can transfer what they learned previously and put it into practice. They will be allowed to use the technology tools available to help them apply their skills to cite their sources without my assistance. If they are able to do this, I will know that the Content, Pedagogy, and Technology integration were effective.
